Gold, silver and fuel rates in August 2026: the month in numbers

Every figure below comes from our own daily readings across 71 Indian cities. This is what August 2026 actually did, month closed and counted.
Gold
24K gold rose 8.7% over August 2026, from ₹14,427 to ₹15,677 a gram.
| 24K | 22K | |
|---|---|---|
| Opened | ₹14,427 | ₹13,225 |
| Closed | ₹15,677 | ₹14,370 |
| Change | +8.7% | +8.7% |
| Month's high | ₹16,397 on 24 August | — |
| Month's low | ₹14,400 on 4 August | — |
On ten grams, that close works out to ₹1,56,770 for 24K and ₹1,43,700 for 22K. One tola, 11.6638 grams, came to ₹1,82,853 and ₹1,67,609.
Across the month's 31 readings, gold rose on 13 days, fell on 11 and held still on 6. Its largest single move was a rise of ₹430 a gram on 20 August — ₹4,300 on ten grams.
The gap between the month's high and low was ₹1,997 a gram, or ₹19,970 on a ten-gram purchase. That is the range someone buying at a random moment in August was exposed to.
Silver
Silver rose 8.5%, from ₹235.00 to ₹255.00 a gram — ₹2,35,000 to ₹2,55,000 a kilogram, which is how silver is usually bought.
| Silver | |
|---|---|
| Opened | ₹2,35,000 /kg |
| Closed | ₹2,55,000 /kg |
| Month's high | ₹2,60,000 /kg on 21 August |
| Month's low | ₹2,35,000 /kg on 1 August |
Silver held completely still on 20 of 30 day-to-day moves. That is normal and not a sign of calm: silver is quoted in coarse steps, so it sits and then jumps. Its biggest single move was ₹10,000 a kilogram on 11 August.
Gold was the larger mover of the two this month.
The gold-to-silver ratio closed at 61.5 — the number of grams of silver it took to match one gram of gold.
Fuel, as the month ended
Petrol across the 53 cities we track ran from ₹99.54 in Dehradun to ₹117.25 in Vijayawada — a spread of ₹17.71 a litre, against a median of ₹107.87.
Diesel ran ₹89.47 to ₹104.96, a ₹15.49 spread, median ₹98.25.
The domestic LPG cylinder ranged from ₹939.50 in Ghaziabad to ₹1,058.00 in Srinagar, median ₹959.50. Cylinder prices are revised monthly rather than daily.
Fuel prices vary by state tax and by distance from the depot, not by the day of the month — we looked at why in our post on fuel prices across states.
What to make of it
One month is a short window, and a single month's direction is not a trend. What a month is good for is the range: gold's high and low were ₹1,997 a gram apart, so the cost of buying on a bad day rather than a good one was about ₹19,970 on ten grams. That is the number worth remembering, because it is the one you can actually be caught by.
