Does gold cost the same in every Indian city? We measured 180 days

Open any gold-rate site and the city pages look suspiciously alike. Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur — the same number, or within a rupee or two of it. It is easy to conclude that the city page is decoration and the rate is really national.
So we checked. We hold a daily series for 71 cities, and we compared four of them — Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Nashik — across 180 consecutive days, from 28 March to 23 September 2026.
The short answer: the gap is real, and it is small
| Measure | 24K gold, across those four cities |
|---|---|
| Median daily spread | ₹96 per gram |
| Smallest day | ₹5 per gram |
| Largest day | ₹999 per gram |
| Days with no gap at all | 0 out of 180 |
Not one day in six months had all four cities at the same price. Mumbai differed from Delhi on 179 of 180 days.
₹96 a gram is about 0.64% of the price. On a single gram that is noise. On a 10-gram purchase it is ₹960 — roughly what a jeweller might charge for hallmarking and a little making. Worth knowing, not worth a train ticket.
Why a snapshot misleads you
Here is the trap. If you look at one moment, gold often does look uniform. On the day we wrote this, 96 cities carried just three distinct 24K prices between them, and 70 of those cities shared a single number.
That collapse is real but temporary. Look across six months and it disappears — the cities separate again the next day. A single reading tells you about that reading, not about how the market behaves.
We learned this the hard way: our own first analysis of city variation was taken from one snapshot and reached the wrong conclusion. The time series corrected it.
The three-tier pattern
When prices do collapse, they do not collapse randomly. On that flat day the three tiers were:
- One national number shared by most of the country
- A Tamil Nadu tier — Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Erode, Dindigul and the rest, all a little higher
- A small Maharashtra group — Bhiwandi, Latur, Nashik
Local jeweller associations set their own rates, and Tamil Nadu's tend to move as a bloc. That is why a Chennai page and a Delhi page can differ on a day when Delhi and Mumbai do not.
Fuel is a completely different story
If gold varies by fractions of a percent, fuel varies by a lot. On the same day:
- Petrol was ₹99.54 a litre in Dehradun
- And ₹117.25 a litre in Vijayawada
A spread of ₹17.71 — about 18%. Fill a 40-litre tank and that is ₹708 of difference for the same fuel.
The reason is structural rather than local sentiment: state VAT. Fuel is taxed per state, so two pumps a few hundred kilometres apart across a border genuinely charge differently, and they do so every single day. Freight from the supplying depot explains most of the smaller gaps within a state.
What this means when you buy
For gold, check your own city, but do not chase a cheaper one. The gap is under one percent and the rate is not what determines your bill anyway — making charges run 8–25% on ornaments and 3% GST sits on top of both. Our gold rate calculator puts those together.
For fuel, the city genuinely matters, and so does the state line. If you drive across one regularly, it is worth knowing which side is cheaper — our petrol price pages list every city we track.
How we measured this
All figures come from the same daily collection that feeds every page on this site. Rates are stored once per commodity in a canonical unit — per gram for metals, per litre for fuel — and every displayed figure is derived from it, so the numbers in this post are the same ones the city pages show.
The comparison used 24K gold for the four cities named, on the 180 days where all four had a published figure. Nothing here is modelled or estimated.
